Definitive Shopping Guide for Big Feet

If you have larger than normal feet, you know how difficult and frustrating it can be to find shoes that fit. Manufacturers are more interested in creating shoes in common sizes so that they can get the biggest return possible. In the past, this meant that people with larger feet were reduced to shopping at specialty stores for styles made from companies that only made big shoes and not other sizes. The selection was often limited, and the styles not as fashionable as the shoes on the high street. Luckily there are more options available today for people with big feet. Here is the definitive shopping guide for finding stylish shoes that fit your feet.

Styles
Today most major manufacturers create shoes in a range of sizes, from very tiny sizes up to the large sizes that fit big feet. One style that always comes in all sizes are trainers. There are a great range of different types of trainers you will be able to find in your size, from high-tech athletic trainers to the colourful, street trainers that look good with jeans. Dress shoes are a bit harder to find in big sizes, especially larger sized heels for women. When shopping around, remember to look for you size but also keep in mind the width of the shoe. Some companies create large sizes but don’t take into account the extra width of your foot, so you could end up with a shoe that pinches the sides of your feet.

Where to Shop
It used to be that people with large feet could only find good fitting shoes at “big and tall” stores. These shops are still around and are a good option for people who have feet that are both wide and long and therefore really hard to fit. However, you won’t find contemporary, fashionable shoes at these stores. To get shoes that are more on trend with the season, you could consider looking at department stores and asking about larger sizes. Most big stores will stock at least a few big sizes in each style to have on hand. The final and best option is to shop around online. You can go to online shops, auction sites and websites that offer overstocked shoes from various stores to find great deals on stylish shoes.

Buying Shoes
When you decide to shop online, make sure you have the right size. Different countries have different sizing charts, so it’s important to check that you are purchasing your shoes in the right country and corresponding size. Sizes also tend to vary slightly among different manufacturers. In order to get the exact right fit, it is a good idea to visit the manufacturer’s website to take a look at their specific sizing chart. Once you start looking around online, you’ll be amazed at just how large the selection of shoes is that will fit your feet.

Your Shopping Guide – Going “Youngnam” Style!

I went shopping recently with my 7 year old niece Kamya, and the experience was an eye opener! Kids today seem to know confidently what the “in” thing in fashion is and what suits them the best! Comparing this to my own embarrassing childhood memories of “matching” skirt-top-socks-shoe outfits or the frilly pink birthday dress, mom proudly got for my sister which ended up making her look like a cake! Let’s just say, I was no fashion icon in those days! I’m marginally better now and find it safer to stick to classic dressing to avoid any faux pas! So when K and I walked into a newly opened shop in our neighborhood I was reasonably confident that I would be able to help her choose some nice, pretty dress for her school Xmas party.

Me: “Kamya, check out these cute frocks! You would look so lovely in this pink dress!”

Kamya (ignoring the pink frills I’m holding, heads to a rack of outfits in colorful denims and embellished jackets): “Wow! This jacket is cool!”

Me: “Er… Are you sure?”

Kamya: “And these black slacks would be perfect with it! The spaghetti top too!”

Well to sum up the 5 minute conversation that followed, Kamya ended up choosing her own clothes and surprisingly it looked great on her! And that’s when I realized Kamya is indeed a little fashionista! Whatever she had picked looked comfortable yet unconventional and still perfect for party wear.

How did she grow up to be so confident and fashion forward? I wondered again.

Is it the influence of TV/movies?

Did she pick it from peer group? Her school/dance class friends/skating class buddies?

Or does she just have a keen sense of style at such a young age?

I ended up narrating this incident to Kamya’s mom, my sister, who burst out laughing. Fashion for kids it seems has evolved a lot! (And I clearly had a lot to learn!) My sister shared how she often shops for Kamya online from stores like Unamia and she only picks stuff she knows Kamya will love to wear. Kamya sometimes even chooses them herself!

So for those of you who are planning to gift a party dress for a kid in your family, here are some does and don’ts (my sister swears by this!)

Nothing “too cute” please! – Everything pink or blue does NOT mean cute! Anything over the top or too much frills is a no-no!

Style first! – If it’s not something a kid would love to wear, do NOT buy it!

Brush up your fashion IQ! – Do some research before shopping (note to self!) It’s a good idea to check with friends who have kids what’s the latest in style – be sure you know what’s a Gangnam style Tuxedo jacket is or that red jeggings need not match with the polka dot top to make it look stylish!

Comfort is a must! – Kids wear is all about comfortable dressing so pick the right size and fit to ensure they wear it comfortably.

Quality worth the price – Expensive outfits do not always mean it’s the best quality! Do check out what material the dress is made of, if it’s easily washable and easy to maintain. Moms would appreciate it much more if you buy something that’s practical than a pain to maintain!

Dressing up is fun! – Fashion for kids is also about fun! Neon colors, funky designs, crazy prints, metallic hues, velvets, a little bit of glitter and shine – kids can carry them off better than we think they can!

Accessories are the icing on the cake! – The right dress is only the beginning! It’s the right accessories that complete the outfit and make kids look smart! So if you are packing a gift, be generous and throw in something extra like a cool sunglass or a funky watch or a pretty hair accessory! Helps you score brownie points!

Fashion Survival Guide: How To Have The Perfect Prom Dress At Less Than A Thousand

Prom dresses can cost thousands especially when it has all those lovely intricate designs that you are convinced will show off all your gorgeous assets. With that said, it is not necessary to spend more for a one-night dress and dread your credit card bill at the same time. There are different ways for you to have the perfect prom dress without having to spend too much and some even cost less than a few dollars or so.

Mom’s Closet

One of the best places to get that perfect prom dress is from your mom’s closet or your grandma’s especially if you are having a retro or themed party. The best part is that it is vintage and free. All you need to do is to add accessories or alter it to fit your size and if your mom or grandma is the same size as you are, then all you really need to do is to have it cleaned up. As most clothes are complete outfits, you would probably find several accessories such as rings, bracelets and other fashion accessories that fit the theme as well.

Thrift Shops/Discount Stores

It might sound tacky but finding a good bargain starts at the local discount store or thrift shops. Some also call it “Dollar Store” as all things are sold for a dollar or less. Some clothes may look too worn so patience is the key here. Look at several clothes and more often than not you will find one or two that just have few damages which you can repair yourself. If you love to sew or know someone who is creative, you can probably alter the old design and create a new ensemble.

D-I-Y Dress

If you love getting down and dirty, then designing your own evening gown or prom dress is just the thing. You don’t have to stick with the traditional chiffon or silk to make your own gown as other fabrics or materials would do as well. Some fabrics that you can use include polyester and rayon which cost less than chiffon or silk. If you intend to use silk, there are some shops that can give you discounts if you buy it per yard.

Online Stores

On the downside, if your mom’s or grandma’s clothes are just not the appropriate ones and you are short of time to make your own, you can also check online for bargain or affordable prom dresses. There are plenty of stores in the web that offer celebrity-inspired dresses that are sold for less than the original ones and can only cost you about $100-$200. Some sites also offer half price for clothes that are only worn once by the owner which one can usually find on bid sites. Do however check for the size as well as ask questions about the condition of the dress and the estimate delivery time to ensure that you will get the dress a few days before your prom night.

Online Fashion Shopping – A Guide for the Modern Man

Online fashion shopping is gaining popularity all over the world. Retailers with internet presence are offering their clients with more choices through this platform. If you think about it, shopping online is better than going to the store. It is quick and convenient, and it is easier to browse through the different choices available. Some retailers also feature marked down items and seasonal sales for online shoppers.

What items should you expect when looking for men’s clothing online?

One great thing about shopping online is like being at the store without leaving the comfort of your home or office. You can browse through various outfit selections and simply click a button to add an item to your shopping cart. Here are some of the pieces you can expect to see from online retailers.

Suits

More retailers are offering suits in their line-up. It is the most elegant piece a man can wear; even some fashion experts say the suit defines the man. This is why it is important that it fits well and looks good on you. You have to think about quality – it should have the right cut and colour, and made from the right fabric.

The most common style today is the two-piece suit consisting of pants and a jacket. As for the fabric, wool is the perennial favourite and is a timeless classic. Wool is crease-resistant and drapes elegantly. It is a fabric that works and looks well even during hot summers. When doing online fashion shopping, look for retailers with custom suits featuring tailored cuts. Look into the quality of fabrics used as well as the overall look of the suit.

Shirts

A man can never have enough shirts. They are perhaps the most flexible item of clothing you can own. Long sleeves are great for formal or semi-formal use, and can be great casual wear as well. The same goes for short-sleeved button downs.

Find retailers with many design options when searching for men’s clothing online. Bold colours are great for suits. Plaid and chequered patterns, on the other hand, are classic and great for casual use. Every man should also have a collection of t-shirts and polos for basic everyday use. Be sure to buy a good mix of classic and trendy pieces.

Pants and denims

An ensemble is not complete without great pants. Most men limit themselves to denims. While there is no problem with that, a modern and fashionable man has other pieces in his closet. Look for retailers with a collection of dress pants, chinos, and denims. The days of having just blue, beige, and black pants are long gone. Spice up your wardrobe with the addition of other colours.
